NestaDev Labs

Researching Tomorrow's Technology for Better Care.

NestaDev Labs is our research and development activity, focused on intelligent software, applied artificial intelligence and accessible digital technologies.

Its purpose is to explore practical solutions to challenges experienced by care organisations, care professionals and the people they support.

How we describe our work

We label everything we talk about so it is always clear what exists today and what is still being explored.

Available product
A product that organisations can use today.
Active development
Being built now, with work under way towards a usable product or capability.
Exploratory research
Early research into whether an idea is useful and feasible. It may never become a product.
Long-term idea
An idea we think is worth exploring in future. No development work has started.

Research areas

Applied Artificial Intelligence

Active development

Exploring how AI can support the work of care organisations.

  • Administrative workflows
  • Knowledge retrieval
  • Document processing
  • Business operations
  • Decision support with human oversight
  • Information accessibility

Intelligent Digital Systems

Exploratory research

Researching connected software and digital systems that can:

  • Improve operational coordination
  • Reduce duplicated administration
  • Support access to relevant information
  • Connect different applications
  • Enable more efficient workflows

Accessible Technology

Exploratory research

Exploring digital tools that are easier to use for:

  • Older adults
  • People with disabilities
  • People with differing communication needs
  • Care professionals
  • Families and support networks

Responsible AI

Guiding principle

A principle that runs through all of our research and products:

  • Privacy
  • Security
  • Transparency
  • Human oversight
  • Accessibility
  • Reliability
  • Ethical technology development

Our research process

Explore → Research → Prototype → Pilot → Evaluate → Develop

  1. Explore

Identify a practical challenge worth solving with the people who experience it.

  2. Research

Understand the context, existing approaches and the constraints that matter.

  3. Prototype

Build an early version to test whether an idea is workable.

  4. Pilot

Trial carefully with real users, with appropriate safeguards.

  5. Evaluate

Review what worked, what did not, and whether to continue.

  6. Develop

Where an idea proves its value, develop it towards a product.

Research concepts may progress towards commercial products following appropriate testing and validation. Many will not, and that is part of responsible research.

Research collaboration

We welcome conversations with organisations and individuals who share an interest in practical, responsible technology for care. We have no formal research partnerships to announce yet; this is an open invitation to explore working together.

We'd like to hear from:

  • Care providers
  • Healthcare organisations
  • Universities
  • Researchers
  • Technology specialists
  • Innovation partners
